The Zwergmennigvogel ( Pericrocotus cinnamomeus ) is a small songbird from the family of the prickly pear family (Campephagidae). It occurs in southern Asia from the Indian subcontinent to the east of Indonesia . A number of subspecies are distinguished.

features

The dwarf mennig bird reaches a body length of up to 16 cm. The tops of males of subspecies P. c. vividus is gray, face and throat are darker gray. The chest, flanks and rump are reddish orange, the belly is yellow-orange. There is an orange and yellow spot on the wings. The upper side of the females is paler, throat and breast are gray-white, the rest of the underside is pale yellow. In the females of the subspecies P. c. sacerdos the belly is colored yellow, while in most of the subspecies the yellow is absent in the females. The coloring on the underside of the females of P. c. separatus appears more washed out. In females of the nominate form and the subspecies P. c. pallidus , the throat and belly are white, the top of the head, the neck and the back are light gray. Males in the first winter are similar to females, but are often orange in color on the flanks.

Vocalizations

The calls are high, thin and drawn out like tswee eet , swee swee swee and the like.

distribution and habitat

The species occurs in southern Asia from the Indian subcontinent to east of Indonesia . A number of subspecies are distinguished. The species inhabits lighter areas in deciduous forests as well as parks and gardens, locally also moor forests and coastal bushland. It occurs at heights up to 1525 m.

Way of life

The diet of the dwarf mening birds consists of insects and their larvae.

  • Pericrocotus cinnamomeus peregrinus ( Linnaeus , 1766) - Northwest Himalayas and northern India.
  • Pericrocotus cinnamomeus cinnamomeus ( Linnaeus , 1766) - Central and Southeast India and Sri Lanka .
  • Pericrocotus cinnamomeus malabaricus ( Gmelin, JF , 1789) - Southwest India.
  • Pericrocotus cinnamomeus vividus Baker, ECS , 1920 - Central Himalayas, East India, Bangladesh , West and Central Myanmar , Southwest and Central Thailand and Andaman Islands.
  • Pericrocotus cinnamomeus thai Deignan , 1947 - Northeast Myanmar, North and Northeast Thailand, Laos .
  • Pericrocotus cinnamomeus sacerdos Riley , 1940 - Cambodia and South Vietnam .
  • Pericrocotus cinnamomeus separatus Deignan , 1947 - Southeast Myanmar and northwest of the Thai peninsula .
  • Pericrocotus cinnamomeus saturatus Baker, ECS , 1920 - Java and Bali .
