Camper Van Beethoven is an alternative rock band from Santa Cruz , California ( USA ).

history

The band, founded in 1983, was characterized by a surreal sense of humor and an eclectic mix of different styles such as pop , ska , punk rock , folk , psychedelia, surf and country . In the early 1980s she was one of the first representatives of indie rock , along with Black Flag , Sonic Youth and Hüsker Dü, to release her records with small record companies. David Immerglück later joined the band, who played guitar and string instruments. They were particularly popular on US college radio because of their ironic lyrics and had a worldwide underground hit with Take The Skinheads Bowling from the album Telephone Free Landslide Victory in 1985.

In 1988 the group signed to Virgin, where they released two albums before separating in 1990.

The members took part in a large number of side projects. Lisher, Pederson and Immerglück played in the progressive rock band Monks of Doom , while Segel and Krummenacher teamed up with Eugene Chadbourne and played as Camper van Chadbourne . Most successful, however, was Lowery, who stayed with Virgin and released several notable albums with Cracker .

In 2002 the former members met for the first time in the program of Cracker appearances. Two years later, after 15 years, the first studio album, the New Roman Times, was recorded. Nonetheless, the album Tusk was released in 2002 , about the history of which only myths were spread by Camper van Beethoven.

In 2013 the album La Costa Perdida was finally released .
