Campo de Tiro de Alcochete

Campo de Tiro de Alcochete is a military training area of ​​the Portuguese Air Force. The Força Aérea Portuguesa uses this area for training military exercises and operations as an air force firing range.

It is located in the greater Margem Sul do Tejo area , around 16 kilometers east of the eponymous town of Alcochete , and has a total area of ​​around 7,600 hectares . In terms of area, it is the largest military facility of its kind in Europe. The facility is owned by the Ministério da Defesa Nacional , but is managed by the Air Force.

history

Campo de Tiro (short: CT), located in the sedimentary basin of the Tagus , was created as an artillery firing range by royal decree of March 24, 1904 . Since then, numerous facilities and outbuildings have been built there by the army. On February 26, 1993 with decree DL 51/93 the Luftwaffe became the main user of the facility. The CT initially had an area of ​​around 1,680 hectares and was expanded in 1985 to 7,539 hectares and several shooting ranges. This huge area also includes a large forest area with cork oaks and pines with a rich fauna. The Campo de Tiro military airfield , an asphalt runway with north-south orientation, is located within the site . The RWY 01/19 is around 1100 meters long.

On May 8th, 2008 it was officially announced that the new commercial airport, project name NAL of the Portuguese capital Lisbon , is to be built on the site of Campo de Tiro .
