Campylomormyrus phantasticus is an African freshwater fish from the Nile pike family(Mormyridae) that is endemic to the Cameroonian Sanaga River.

features

Campylomormyrus phantasticus reaches a length of 45 cm and has a moderately high body. The species is dark brown in color, sometimes a dark, diamond-shaped band extends between the first rays of the dorsal and anal fin. Light stripes, as in Campylomormyrus tamandua , are missing.

The snout is elongated tubular and bent downwards. The muzzle length is 19 to 31% of the "post-orbital" standard length (distance between the eye and the base of the caudal fin) or 1.3 to 2.5 times the "post-orbital length of the head" (distance between the eye and the rear edge of the gill cover). The snout is particularly extended in individuals who are longer than 30 years. The small mouth at the tip is set with conical teeth, three are in the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw. There is a short barb on the lower jaw . The length of the barbels is 0.8 to 1.77 times the diameter of the eyes. The nostrils are close together, closer to the eyes than to the end of the snout. The eyes are small.

The length of the dorsal fin is 27 to 29% of the "post-orbital" standard length, that of the slightly longer anal fin is 30 to 33% of the "post-orbital" standard length. The tail stalk has a length of 16.5 to 22.6% of the "post-orbital" standard length. The forked caudal fin is scaled.

Like all Nilhechte, Campylomormyrus phantasticus is capable of electrical communication and electrical orientation.

  • Fin formula : dorsal 28–32, anal 31–34.
  • Scale formula : SL 76–82, 21–22 rows of scales between lateral line and dorsal fin, 18 between lateral line and pelvic fins and 12 around the caudal peduncle.
