Canada (unit)

The Canada or Medida , also Cahada , Canhado , was a Portuguese liquid measure . It was true in Portugal , Galicia and Brazil . The liquid measure, which was the same in Galicia, had nothing in common with the Portuguese.

Brazil

  • generally 1 Canada = 4 Quartilhos / Quartillo = 2.66204 Liters

Rio de Janeiro

  • 1 Canada / Medida = 4 Quartilhos = 3.02817 liters
  • 180 Medida = 545 liters
  • 1 pipe ( port wine ) = 190 medida

  • 1 Canada = 7.2 liters
  • 1 pipe syrup = 100 canadas
  • 1 pipe rum = 72 canadas

Portugal

In 1835 a Portuguese government commission was supposed to standardize the measurements, but nothing was known about a success.

  • 1 Canada = 70.33 Parisian cubic inches = 1.3945 liters
  • 1000 Canadas = 30.7 gallons (Imperial)
  • 2 Meios = ½ Canada
  • 1 Almuda / Amalde = 12 Canadas
  • 1 pipe rum = 60 to 75 canadas
  • 5.25 Canadas (Lisbon) = 7.28 liters

Ratios were 1 Canada (Bahia) = 5 1/6 Canadas ( Lisbon )

Galicia

In Galicia the Canada was also a liquid measure, but had nothing in common with the Portuguese.

  • 1 Canada = ¼ Müdd / Moyo = 4 Ollas = 68 Azumbres = 192 Cuartillos = 159.761 liters
  • 1 cuartillo = 29.054 Parisian cubic inches = 0.576327 liters
