Cancer Barrack was a German music group that was founded in Hamburg in 1986 . Alongside the band Girls Under Glass , it emerged from the remaining part of the gothic rock formation Calling Dead Red Roses and was able to record some successes in the independent and dark wave environment of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

history

In 1985 Axel Ermes, Andreas Klatt, Thorsten Cichowski and Henning Lamp'l formed the band Courage of Despair . After a new singer was found in 1986 with Torsten Hammann for the following year and a half, it was decided to rename the group to Cancer Barrack . The name is borrowed from the poem “Man and woman go through the cancer barracks” by Gottfried Benn .

Just like the Calling Dead Red Roses and Girls Under Glass, Cancer Barrack first played Gothic Rock on their 1989 debut EP Luscious , which was clearly reminiscent of American bands such as Christian Death and Mephisto Walz due to its hardness and deep, powerful bass lines. In particular, the songs Arlette and King Death were able to establish themselves underground. The EP was recorded and mixed with Christian Mevs by the punk band Slime . Volker "Zaphor" Zacharias took over the singing at this time, who then sang with Girls Under Glass .

In the 1990s the band changed stylistically as well as in the line-up. In addition to echoes of metal and hard rock, German-language texts were also used for the first time. Torsten Hammann was responsible for the singing again. Her biggest hit of this era is the song Beischlaf mit 60 kg minced meat , which found its way to various compilations . It received some attention when the band called the radio show Domian as a joke and described the content of the song as a "problem".

In 1993 Axel Ermes left the band after the studio recordings for the album Leben and was replaced by Thomas van de Scheck . Cancer Barrack broke up in 1994. Despite initial concerns about releasing a best-of CD after only two albums, it was released in 1998 with two unreleased songs.
