Candelaria is a small town with about 10,000 inhabitants in the south of the Mexican state of Campeche . Candelaria is the administrative seat ( cabecera ) of the large community ( municipio ) Candelaria with almost 50,000 inhabitants.

The place is on the Río Candelaria at a height of about 50 m above sea level. d. M. The next larger town is Escárcega (approx. 67 km to the northeast). The climate is humid and rainy.
Residents and economy
The population in the area, mostly from other regions of Mexico, lives from agriculture. Craftsmen, merchants, traders and service providers have settled in the city.
history
The region around Candelaria belonged to the Mayan settlement area - the most important evidence is the archaeological site of Itzamkanac (often also referred to as El Tigre ), but also the only partially excavated sites of El Naranjo , Peje Lagarto etc. a. are located in the municipality. In the later extremely sparsely populated region, the American Campeche Timber and Fruit Company operated a branch from 1884 to 1905 for the extraction of the dye palo de ink from bloodwood trees . The community rights were only granted in 1998.
