Candelaria is a municipality in the Mexican state of Campeche . The municipality has 41,194 inhabitants (2010 census) and is 5688 km² in size. The administrative seat and largest town of the municipality is the Candelaria of the same name .
The municipality of Candelaria includes the archaeological site of Itzamkanac .
geography
The municipality of Candelaria is located in the south of the Mexican state of Campeche at heights of up to just over 200 m . A good 65% of it belongs to the physiographic province of the Yucatán peninsula and just under 35% to the southern coastal plain of the Gulf , over 99% to the hydrographic region Grijalva - Usumacinta and a good 0.4% to the Yucatán Oeste region . The geology of the municipality is determined by alluvion (55% of the municipality area) and limestone (40% of the municipality area); the predominant soil types are Vertisol (42%), Leptosol (30%) and Phaeozem (16%). More than 60% of the community area is forested, around 28% is pasture.
The municipality of Candelaria borders on the municipalities of Calakmul , Escárcega and Carmen, as well as the state of Tabasco .

The 2010 census counted 41,194 people in 10,298 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 2,329 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 1,532 speakers from the Chol and 245 speakers from the Tzeltal . Over 15 percent of the population was illiterate. 14,019 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 84% were men and 1.4% were unemployed. A good 31% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
