Calakmul is a municipality in the Mexican state of Campeche . The municipality has 26,882 inhabitants (2010 census) and is 14,031.5 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is Xpujil .
The name Calakmul translates as 'city of adjacent hills'. There are numerous archaeological sites in the municipality, including, in addition to the eponymous Calakmul , Balamkú , Becán , Chicanná , Hormiguero , Nadzcaan , Río Bec , Uxul and Xpuhil . The municipality was created in 1996 by separating from the municipality of Hopelchén .
geography
The municipality of Calakmul forms the southeast of the Mexican state of Campeche and lies largely at an altitude between 100 m and 200 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Yucatán peninsula and to the sub-province of the karst and hills of Campeche. The geology of the municipality is dominated by limestone (81%) with 19% alluvion ; the predominant soil types are Leptosol (35%), Vertisol (34%) and Phaeozem (25%). Over 95% of the community area is forested, with a good one percent each used for agriculture or as pasture land.
The municipality of Calakmul borders the municipalities Hopelchén , Candelaria , Escárcega and Champotón as well as the state of Quintana Roo and Guatemala .

The 2010 census counted 26,882 people in around 5,900 residential units in the municipality. 7,401 of these people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 5,317 speakers from the Chol and 759 speakers from the Tzeltal . Almost 18% of the population was illiterate. 8,219 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 87% were men or 1% were unemployed. Over 46% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
