Hopelchén is a municipality in the Mexican state of Campeche . The municipality has 37,777 inhabitants (2010 census) and is 7803.2 km² in size. The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is Hopelchén of the same name .
The name Hopelchén translates as 'five wells'. The two archaeological sites of Santa Rosa Xtampak and Dzibilnocac are among the tourist attractions in the municipality .
geography
The municipality of Hopelchén is located in the northeast of the Mexican state of Campeche largely at an altitude between 100 m and 200 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Yucatán peninsula and to the sub-province of the karst and hills of Campeche. The geology of the municipality is dominated by limestone (89%) with 5% Alluvionen , the predominant soil types are Leptosol (50%), Vertisol (15%) and Luvisol (14%). Almost 90% of the community area is forested, around 8% are used for agriculture.
The municipality of Hopelchén borders the municipalities of Calkiní , Hecelchakán , Tenabo , Campeche , Champotón and Calakmul as well as the states of Yucatán and Quintana Roo .

The 2010 census counted 37,777 people in a good 8,300 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 15,867 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 15,558 speakers of the Mayathan . Almost 12% of the population was illiterate. 12,726 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 85% were men and 1.3% were unemployed. Over 31% of the population lived in extreme poverty.

The municipality of Hopelchén comprises 122 inhabited localidades , of which the main town as well as Bolonchén de Rejón and Vicente Guerrero are classified as urban by the INEGI .
