Calkiní is a municipality in the Mexican state of Campeche . The Calkiní has ​​52,890 inhabitants (2010 census) and is 2108.7 km² in size. The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the eponymous Calkiní .

geography

The municipality of Calkiní is located in the far north of the Mexican state of Campeche largely at an altitude of less than 100  m . It is entirely part of the physiographic province of the Yucatán Peninsula and the Yucatán Norte hydrological region . The geology of the municipality is dominated by limestone (56%) and lacustrian sediments (41%), the predominant soil types are Solonchak (43%) and Leptosol (39%). About 40% of the community area is taken up by rainforest and about 25% by mangroves.

The municipality of Calkiní borders on the municipalities Hopelchén and Hecelchakán and the state of Yucatán .

The 2010 census counted 52,890 people in 12,666 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 26,442 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 25,910 speakers of the Mayathan . Almost 13% of the population was illiterate. 20,515 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 70% were men and 1.5% were unemployed. Over 19% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
