Escárcega is a municipality in the Mexican state of Campeche . The municipality has 54,184 inhabitants (2010 census) and is 4798 km² in size. The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Escárcega of the same name .
geography
The municipality of Escárcega is located in the center of the Mexican state of Campeche at up to just over 200 m above sea level. More than 99% of it belongs to the physiographic province of the Yucatán peninsula and almost half a percent to the southern coastal plain of the Gulf or a good 60% to the hydrographic region Grijalva - Usumacinta and almost 40% to the Yucatán Oeste region . The geology of the municipality is determined by 65% limestone and 32% alluvion ; the predominant soil types are Leptosol (48%), Vertisol (38%) and Phaeozem (11%). More than 80% of the community area is forested, around 16% is pasture land.
The municipality of Escárcega borders the municipalities of Champotón , Calakmul , Candelaria and Carmen .

The 2010 census counted 54,184 people in 13,299 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 3,072 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 1,726 speakers of the Chol , 786 speakers of the Mayathan and 201 speakers of the Tzeltal . Almost twelve percent of the population were illiterate. 19,450 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which a good 75% were men and approx. 3% were unemployed. Over 28% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
