Campeche is a municipality in the Mexican state of Campeche of the same name . The municipality has 259,005 inhabitants (2010 census) and is 3254 km² in size. The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is San Francisco de Campeche , which is also the capital of the state.
In the municipality of Campeche are the archaeological sites of the Maya Edzná and Acanmul .
geography
The municipality of Campeche is located in the northern part of the Mexican state of Campeche at heights of just over 200 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Yucatán peninsula, 90% to the hydrographic region Yucatán Oeste and a good nine percent to the Yucatán Norte region . The geology of the municipality is determined by limestone (68% of the municipality area) with 22% alluvion ; the predominant soil types are Vertisol (28%), Leptosol (27%) and Phaeozem (18%). More than 70% of the community area is forested, 18% is used for agriculture.
The municipality of Campeche borders the municipalities Tenabo , Hopelchén and Champotón as well as the Gulf of Mexico .

In the 2010 census, 259,005 people in 71,054 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 12,863 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 10,330 speakers of the Mayathan and 610 speakers of the Mam . Five percent of the population was illiterate. 113,662 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 62% were men or 2.5% were unemployed. About 5.7% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
