Canelas is a place and a former municipality in Portugal .

history

In the municipality of Canelas, approximately 490 million year old trilobites were found , which are among the largest known specimens in the world. A trilobite can therefore also be seen in the center of the municipal coat of arms.

The Romans settled in the 1st century BC. BC settled here to mine gold in particular.

The village of Vilarinho was officially mentioned for the first time in 883 AD, as a locality of the municipality of Canelas.

The municipality of Canelas was part of the Alvarenga district until 1843, when it has been part of Arouca.

Canelas was the seat of a municipality of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( Concelho ) of Arouca , in the Aveiro district . The last time in the community lived 801 residents (as of June 30, 2011).

The parish church Igreja Paroquial de Canelas , also Igreja de São Miguel after its patron saint , is a listed building.

The place is surrounded by extensive forest areas, which are ideal for nature-based sports. Hiking trails and bike paths are laid out and known nationwide.
