Alvarenga is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Arouca . It has 1223 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

The Ponte de Alvarenga

history

Finds prove a prehistoric settlement. The present-day community was probably formed during the Reconquista . In 1094 there was already a separate community here.

King Manuel I granted Alvarenga town rights in 1514 . In addition to the municipality of the same name, the Alvarenga district also included the municipalities of Canelas and Janarde . In the course of the various administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , the Alvarenga district was dissolved in 1855 and incorporated into the Arouca district.
