Várzea is a village and municipality in Portugal .

history

Finds prove a settlement at least since the Castro culture , then Romans settled here. Excavations of a Roman country estate in Malafaia confirm its existence until the Visigothic Empire and possibly until the arrival of the Moors from 711 AD. The first officially documented mention of the place comes from a deed of purchase from 1101.

Today's parish church Igreja Paroquial de Várzea de São Salvador (also Igreja de São Roque after its patron saint ) has its origins in the 12th century, when it first functioned as a monastery of an Augustinian order.

Around 1900 the community was dissolved and Urrô was annexed to be an independent community again since the 1930s.
