Fermedo is a small town ( Vila ) and a municipality in Portugal .

history

Excavations show a prehistoric settlement, while tombstones are from Roman times. From his time as a place in the Visigothic Empire in the 5th / 6th centuries. Century AD probably comes the place name, which is said to have developed from the then Pharamundo or Faramondo via Fermudo to today's Fermedo.

In the course of the Reconquista , the monastery of Crestuma received the area around 922 , and Fermedo became the seat of its own district. Presumably it received its first town charter before the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal by Count Heinrich von Burgund ( Portuguese : D. Henrique), but there are no clear documents here. The renewed city rights from 1275 by King D. Afonso III. Thus, the first documented city law Fermedos that since the title of a Vila transmits (administration small town). King D. Manuel I gave Fermedo renewed city rights on September 27, 1514.

Fermedo remained an independent administrative district, with its seat in the town of Cabeçais, until the district was dissolved on October 24, 1855. Since then, Fermedo has been a municipality in the Arouca district.
