Chave is a town and municipality in Portugal .
history
Megalithic finds in the region prove a prehistoric settlement. The current place was probably created during the Reconquista . The first mentions of the place come from the Middle Ages. The Arouca Monastery, built in the 10th century, owned estates here, and trade travelers between Porto and Viseu frequented it. The royal registers from 1527 stated 54 households for the place. In 1878 197 households with 998 inhabitants were counted here. Between 1900 and 1910 the community passed the 1,000-inhabitant mark.
