Scientific name
Canthophorus melanopterus
( Herrich-Schäffer , 1835)

Canthophorus melanopterus is a bug from the family of earth bugs (Cydnidae).

features

The bugs are 6.0 to 8.0 millimeters long. They are very similar to Canthophorus impressus and the blue-black earth bug ( Canthophorus dubius ). They can be distinguished from these species by their genital morphology and the color of the membrane of the hemielytras . In contrast to the similar species, the membrane is not whitish, but black-brown in color. As with similar species, the nymphs have a dark red colored abdomen. Shortly after molting into an adult insect, the bugs are still colored this way and only darken after a while.

Distribution and way of life

The species is widespread in the Mediterranean and east of the Alps as far as the Vienna Basin, the Czech Republic and also in North Tyrol, where the species was first detected in 1980 by Gerhard Schuster on the Kaunerberg in the Upper Inn Valley on Leinblatt. The rare species is missing in Germany. The bugs can often be seen in large numbers on the sandalwood family (Santalaceae) such as linseed leaf ( Thesium ) and Osyris alba . Their way of life is similar to that of Canthophorus impressus and Canthophorus dubius .
