Cape Maria van Diemen is a cape in the Far North District of the Northland regionon the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The cape was given its name in 1643 when the Dutch navigator and explorer Abel Tasman discovered New Zealand and named the cape after the wife of the governor of the Dutch East Indies , Antonio van Diemen .
geography
Cape Maria van Diemen is located around 6.5 km southwest of Cape Reinga and around 9 km northwest of the end of Ninety Mile Beach . The cape is the westernmost point of the Aupōuri Peninsula . Upstream of the cape in a north-westerly direction is the island of Motuopao Island, around 350 m away, and to the east of the cape, Te Werahi Beach extends over a length of 5 km in a north-easterly direction. The cape is connected to the beach by a sandy headland.
The up to 88 m high cape can be reached via the Twilight / Te Werahi Loop Track , an approx. 14 km long circular hiking trail that leads from New Zealand State Highway 1 on the one hand to the west over sandy dunes directly to the cape and on the other hand over the Maungatiketike Point can be hiked.
Cape Maria van Diemen Lighthouse
The Cape Maria van Diemen Lighthouse , which was built between 1877 and 1879 on the Motuopao Island off the Cape , was in operation until 1940 . The beacon covered the sea from the southeast in a clockwise direction to the northeast and was replaced by the Cape Reinga Lighthouse after its shutdown on October 3, 1941 . The remains of the old lighthouse and the place have been a listed building since June 22, 2007.
