The Cape Palmas in Liberia is located in the extreme southwest of West Africa . It consists of a small, rocky peninsula and is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land ( isthmus ).

location

The city of Harper is located on Cape Palmas . The entire Maryland region is often referred to as Cape Palmas. Just west of the cape is the mouth of the Hoffman River . Approx. 21 km to the east is the border between Liberia and the Ivory Coast , which is formed by the Cavalla River .

On the peninsula is the Cape Palmas Lighthouse , a former lighthouse that warned of the numerous shallows in the waters and is now used as a popular observation tower.
The offshore tiny island Russwurm Island is a bare rock on the southeast side of Cape Palmas, rising barely 10 meters from the sea at the highest point.

British nautical chart CAPE PALMAS (1869)

The first European to see Cape Palmas was the Portuguese explorer Diogo Gomes in 1458 . He toured the west coast of Africa on behalf of Henry the Navigator . When he got to the point from which the coast branches off to the east, he called this point Cabo das Palmas , which means Cape of the Palms in English and developed into the current name. The adjacent river was also called Rio das Palmas first and was later renamed Hoffman River .
