The Capitol Center is a skyscraper in Columbia , South Carolina . At 106 meters (349 ft ), it is the tallest building in Columbia and all of South Carolina. In the building there are around 400 offices in which around 2000 people work every day. It has 25 floors and is surpassed as the tallest structure in South Carolina by the Prysmian Copper Wire Tower in Abbeville . Work began in June 1985 with the demolition of the Wade Hampton Hotel. The facade consists of double-sided glass and horizontal aluminum cladding. It was completed in 1987 under the name AT&T Building in the wake of the "Highrise Boom". To date, Affinity and the South Trust Bank also owned the rights to the name. In 1986, the unfinished building, which was partially funded by the State of South Carolina, served as an example of excessive government investment in Carroll A. Campbell's gubernatorial campaign .
The tower offers 43,000 square feet of office space, most of which is rented to the state and local law firms. Connected to the tower is a 7-storey parking garage that provides more than 1000 parking spaces. The Capital City Club is also located on the top floor.
