description

Distribution map of the Caponiidae

Nine genera only have two eyes, which is why these spiders are called two-eyed spiders in English . The representatives of the genus Caponia still have 8 eyes, the Nopsida species have 4 eyes. While many other members of the real spiders reduced their anterior median eyes early on in their evolutionary development, this pair of anterior median eyes is still present in most Caponiidae and is usually particularly large. Another unusual feature of the family is the absence of the book lung . Members of the Caponiidae each have a pair of tubular and sieve tracheoes .

Behavior and way of life

Little is known about their prey and habits. The ecribellate spiders of the genera Orthonops and Tarsonops spin silky cells under rocks and stones in arid habitats that they leave during the night to hunt. Willis John Gertsch reports that they can be found more often in the communal webs of social spiders.

Systematics and distribution
