The Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer House is a historic building in Stonington , Connecticut . It served as the home of Nathaniel Brown Palmer , one of the first three people to see Antarctica .
Built in the Greek Revival and Italianate styles , the building was constructed in 1852 by Nathaniel Palmer and his brother Alexander Smith Palmer. It is located on a hill above the city and is particularly noticeable because of the octagonal dome on the roof.
Until it was bought by the Stonington Historical Society, which is committed to preserving historic buildings in the town, in 1994, it was unclear whether the building would be demolished . However, after purchase, it was given a contemporary look and was recognized as a National Historic Landmark on June 19, 1996 . On the same day it was entered as a monument in the National Register of Historic Places . Today the house houses a museum in which pictures and data from Palmer's career as a seaman are exhibited.
