Capture One , and Capture One Pro is a commercial image processing - software for editing, converting and managing images in raw format (Raw) or a raw converter . It is developed by the camera manufacturer Phase One and was originally aimed primarily at photographers who take photos with high-quality cameras - especially medium format cameras from their own company - but has been increasingly developed for a wider audience.

history

The first version of Capture One was still referred to as Portrait One ; it appeared in the mid-2000s. After the successor version was initially renamed to Lightphase Capture , the name Capture One, which is still in use today, followed from version number 2.7 .

Other (main) versions appeared in chronological order as follows:

  • Capture One Ver. 4, December 2007, in October 2008 the Pro version
  • Capture One Ver. October 5, 2009
  • Capture One Ver. December 6, 2010
  • Capture One Ver. November 7, 2012, November 28, 2012 Ver. 7.0.1
  • Capture One Ver. 8, September 16, 2014
  • Capture One Ver. 9, November 30, 2015

  • Capture One Ver. 11, November 30, 2017
  • Capture One Ver. 12, November 29, 2018
  • Capture One Ver. 12 for students, August 8, 2019

Range of functions

Capture One was one of the first programs to support tethered shooting , i.e. so-called wired photography. This makes it possible to control the camera from the computer or to transfer the images directly to the hard drive of the computer instead of to a memory card.

The program available for the macOS and Windows operating systems is available in Chinese (simplified), Czech, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Swedish.

In addition to raw conversion, Capture One also offers image processing options. A special feature here is that all changes are made on the basis of the raw data, which offers a correspondingly higher image quality than converting a raw image to JPG / TIFF first and then editing it. A tool is also included that can be used to create a high-contrast image (HDR) from a raw file . In addition, recordings can be converted into gray-scale images with various setting options for the color channels and tonal value separations or local adjustments such as noise reduction, selective white balance, etc. can be made. The images can be stored in a database and exported to external image processing programs .

On November 30, 2017, Capture One Pro 11 was released. Working with layers has been made more intuitive and clearer, the associated mask function has been expanded to include the so-called "Refine Mask" option, as well as a "Annotations" function that enables the sketching of planned work steps . In addition, the export options have been expanded to include some useful functions that simplify working with familiar graphics programs.

A special Sony and Fujifilm edition was created in 2018 from the close cooperation with Sony in the field of image recording sensors. The range of functions of the Sony Pro or Fujifilm Edition is identical to the "normal" Pro version, but only raw files from Sony or Fujifilm cameras can be processed. The price is correspondingly lower.

The new functions of the version released in December 2018 include the radial mask, the luminance range and a modern-looking interface.

The new version 20 appeared on December 4, 2019. The color editor was expanded and an HDR tool was added. With version 13.1.0 of Capture One 20, various more extensive adjustments were made. In addition to a new logo, there are four basic packages: one package enables the processing of RAW images from all common cameras, three packages are specifically aimed at users of the camera models from Fujifilm, Sony and Nikon.
