Corrado Ricci (born April 18, 1858 in Ravenna , † June 5, 1934 in Rome ) was an Italian art historian and monument conservator .

Life

Corrado Ricci studied law in Bologna, but led excavations at San Francesco in Ravenna as early as 1877 , which unearthed ancient jewelry and wrote the Guida di Ravenna , which was highly praised by Giosuè Carducci . After completing his studies, he became an assistant at the Biblioteca Nazionale di Firenze , he also taught art history at the University of Bologna and worked as a librarian at the university library. Here he made friends with Olindo Guerrini . The writings Studi e polemiche dantesche (1880) andVite degli eccellenti capitani di Cornelio Nepote tradotte da Matteo Maria Bojardo (1885). His font L'arte dei bambini , published in 1887, also appeared in German and English translation.

In 1893 Ricci first became an employee, then head of the Galleria di Parma . He took over the management of the Galleria Estense , worked in the Uffizi and in 1897 was appointed Sovrintendente dei monumenti in Ravenna. From 1906 he worked for thirteen years as Direttore generale delle antichità e belle arti and in this role he campaigned for the protection, restoration and conservation of art treasures throughout Italy. In 1919 he was appointed president of the Reale Istituto d'Archeologia e Storia dell'Arte , in 1923 he became a senator and in 1929 president of the Consiglio superiore delle antichità e belle arti . In the last years of his life he devoted himself to his main work, the Tavole storiche dei mosaici ravennati .

He belonged to the Accademia dei Lincei since 1916 as a corresponding member and from 1921 as a national member. In 1919 he was accepted as an external member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts .
