Phase One is a Danish manufacturer of digital high-end camera systems and digital backs in medium format . In addition, the company offers software products such as the RAW converter Capture One , which supports its own digital backs and many DSLR systems.

Company history

Phase One was founded in 1993 by the Danish inventor Samir Léhaff. As a manufacturer of drum scanners for prepress , he was convinced that direct capture in a digital camera is the ultimate method for digitizing images.

In 1994 Phase One was acquired by a leading Danish private equity firm. Leaf Imaging has been part of Phase One since 2009 . In 2009, Phase One acquired the Microsoft Expression Media image management program (original name: iView Media ) from Microsoft . Also in 2009, Phase One took over a majority stake in the Japanese camera manufacturer Mamiya .

The British financial investor Silverfleet Capital has been involved in Phase One since 2014 . Phase One is headquartered in Copenhagen .

target group

The main target group of Phase One are professional photographers as well as institutions with professional image creation and processing (e.g. in the health and education sectors).

The digital camera backs are part of the Phase One camera systems, but can also be used on cameras from other manufacturers. The listed crop factor relates to the image size of 56 mm × 41.5 mm of the analog medium format 6 x 4.5 on which the cameras from Phase One are based.

Phase One offers both lenses from the German manufacturer Schneider Kreuznach and its own optics manufactured by Mamiya for the XF camera system . In addition to cameras and digital backs, Phase One offers the Capture One and Capture Pilot programs . Capture One is an editing and management program for images in RAW format. In addition to the Phase One digital backs, it also supports a large number of DSLR cameras from various manufacturers. By 2018, Phase One also offered Media Pro on , a program for managing collections of images, which can also handle large libraries. Capture Pilot is an application for Apple iOS devices such as iPhone or iPad that is used to access Capture One image libraries over a network .
