The main focus of Max Elb GmbH was the production of rust removers and penetrating oils for cleaning and lubricating, with the brand name becoming a synonym for rust removers over time.

The connection to the current headquarters in Duisburg came about in 1922 through the participation of Rütgerswerke , Berlin, in Max Elb GmbH, to which the Duisburg chemical factory Lindenhof C. Weyl & Co. AG belonged.

In 1923 the trademark rights to the name Caramba were transferred to the newly founded Max Elb AG and from 1929 the multi-oil was marketed by the subsidiary Deutsche Glühstoff GmbH. The descendants of Max Elb and Deutsche Glühstoff GmbH were expropriated during National Socialism. After the end of the Second World War , the production of Caramba spray oil was resumed by the Rütgerswerke at its location in Duisburg.

In 1949 the first aerosol filling system with propane / butane instead of CFC was designed and patented and put into operation in 1950.

In 1965, the product portfolio was expanded to include car care products such as contact sprays , paint care products and underbody protection .

In 1970 the trademark rights were transferred to Caramba on Rütgers and in 1975 Caramba Chemie GmbH was founded. In the 1980s, the company expanded its product range to include glass, plastic and wheel care products. In 1989 the two-chamber spray can with air as a separate propellant gas and in 1990 the introduction of the one-chamber system with the propellant gas air and the product in one chamber.

In 2003, production capacities were expanded and another aerosol filling plant was put into operation.

Since 2004 Caramba has been one of the official "Brands of the Century".

In 2007, Caramba Chemie GmbH & Co KG was taken over by Berner SE together with Wigo Chemie GmbH. In the same year, Bremen-based TEGEE Chemie GmbH was also taken over by Berner SE, which produces cleaning and care products for commercial consumers and now operates under the name Caramba Bremen GmbH.

In 2008, Caramba Chemie in the Netherlands took over Rumler Chemie and the Christian Maurer Group, headquartered in Austria, from where the south-east European countries such as B. Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria are served.
