Carel Jan Jozef Marie Stolker (born June 23, 1954 in Leiden ) is a Dutch legal scholar and rector of the University of Leiden .

Life

Carel is the son of the psychologist Dr. Petrus (Piet) Johannes Stolker (born March 21, 1923 in Enschede; † January 28, 2013 in Leiden) and the Dees B. M Linders (born October 1, 1924 in Dordrecht; † October 16, 1998 in Cairo). He grew up with two brothers and a sister. Stolker had attended Bonaventura College in Leiden. After completing his military service, he studied from 1974 to 1979 at the University of Leiden . Here he received his doctorate in law on November 9, 1988, with a topic on health law Aansprakelijkheid van de arts . In 1991, he taught liability law for a year at the University of California's Hastings College of the Law, San Francisco . He then published numerous articles on liability law with the American professor at the Hasting Collage David I. Levine . From 1992 to 1993 he was a member of the Task Force on Albania in the Council of Europe , the aim of which was to draw up a civil code for the country. He also participated as editor, commentator and editor of the civil code.

He became editor-in-chief of the loose leaf collection Onrechtmatige Daad (negligence). Stolker was a member of the Air Freight Documentation Committee (the so-called Hoekstra Committee), which carried out an investigation into the cargo of the El-Al-Flight 1862 , which crashed in 1992 in the Amsterdam Bijlmer district. On January 16, 1998, he became professor of law in the department of civil law at the Leiden University, which he took up with the introductory speech Homo litigans - de weg naar de claimcultuur . In February of the same year he took over as director of the EM Meijers Institute. In his capacity as a professor, he mainly dealt with legal topics relating to health care, scientific theories and comparative law in his lectures .

Among other things, he served as a member (2005) and co-chair (2010) of two nationwide audit committees of the Dutch judiciary. Carel Stolker is deputy judge at the court in Haarlem and at the Court of Appeal in 's-Hertogenbosch. In 2001 he became vice dean of the law faculty of the Leiden University and from January 1, 2005 to September 1, 2011 he was dean of the faculty. He is co-founder of the Strategic Alliance of Research Faculties of Law (freely translated: the strategic community for research in the faculties of law, (SARFal)) and a member of the scientific committee "Europaeum". After working on a book about law schools around the world in 2011/12, he took over the rectorate of the University of Leiden from Paul van der Heijden on February 8, 2013 .

Carel Stolker got married to Anneke van der Delft. There are three daughters from the marriage.
