Carl Achatz

Carl Anton Achatz (born September 1, 1901 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ; † January 11, 1974 in Stockholm , Sweden ) was a Swedish flautist and conductor of Austrian origin.

Life

Carl Achatz grew up in Vienna. In 1913 he was a student of Ary van Leeuwen at the Vienna Music Academy . From 1920 he was first flutist in the Kungliga Filharmoniska Orkestern . In 1927 he became a Swedish citizen. From 1940 to 1942 he had a war contract with the Vienna State Opera . A third position as solo flutist was created for him during the war. Before that, he auditioned for Wilhelm Furtwängler and Hans Knappertsbusch on August 31, 1940 . On September 1, he played at a performance of the Magic Flute and after an audition on September 3, 1942, with the approval of the orchestra's wind soloists, he was awarded the contract. In 1942 he joined the Berlin Philharmonic under Furtwängler. In 1944 he returned to Stockholm from Berlin. This time to the Royal Court Orchestra (Kungliga Hovkapellet) at the Royal Opera . In 1954 he returned to the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra as solo flutist . On May 19, 1960 he was accepted into the Royal Swedish Academy of Music . He was a member of the International Society for New Music and the Fylkingen organization .

Achatz is the father of the pianist Dag Achatz (* 1942) and the choreographer Susanne Valentin. From 1955, he was later Elena Arturowna Achatz with the Swedish painter Eléna Michéew (1899 to 1972) , married.

The Swedish National Museum houses a painting by the flautist Carl Achatz by the Swedish painter Eva Bagge (1871–1964).
