Carl Axel Arrhenius
Carl Axel Arrhenius (born March 29, 1757 in Stockholm ; † November 20, 1824 ) was a Swedish artillery officer as well as an amateur geologist and chemist .
Life
As the son of Professor Jakob Arrhenius , he turned to the military at an early age and became an artilleryman at the Vaxholm location . Between 1788 and 1790 he took part in the Russo-Swedish War . After getting to know Peter Jacob Hjelm from the Royal Swedish Coin Laboratory, he became interested in mineralogy and chemistry.
Arrhenius found a hitherto unknown black mineral in the Ytterby pit in 1787/88 . This later led to the discovery of the element yttrium . In 1817 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences .
