Carl Axel Raab

Carl Axel Raab , also Karl Axel Raab (born November 12, 1835 in Stockholm , † February 18, 1871 in Düsseldorf ), was a Swedish portrait , animal and landscape painter .

Life

Raab, scion of the baronial Swedish aristocratic family Raab , was the son of chamberlain Carl Wilhelm Raab and his wife Sofia Lindström and nephew of the officer and painter Axel Arvid Raab (1793-1836). Until 1866 he served as a sergeant in the Dalarna regiment . In parallel to his military service, he studied painting at the Stockholm Art Academy from 1859 to 1865 . In 1870 he went to Düsseldorf to devote himself entirely to art. As the center of the Düsseldorf School of Painting , this city was a traditional travel destination for Scandinavian painters in the 19th century. His death in 1871 ended his painting career prematurely.
