Johan Carl Ernst Berling (born August 30, 1812 in Copenhagen , † March 30, 1871 in Ismailia , Egypt) was a Danish publisher and confidante of King Frederick VII of Denmark .

Life

Berling learned the printing trade and was heir to the family business that published Berlingske Tidende . The childhood friend of the future King Friedrich VII was in a relationship with Louise Rasmussen , a former educator and ballet dancer , around 1840 . She later entered a morganatic marriage with the king and was ennobled as liege countess. Berling supported Louise Countess Danner , who influenced the king in terms of popular, peasant-friendly politics. He played an important role at court, but like the countess was considered an upstart.

In the course of a political crisis in 1859 the National Liberals tried to overthrow Berling. On December 30, 1859, he resigned from all his positions at court. Berling then vigorously turned to the newspaper publisher he had inherited and promoted Danish literature. Berling traveled a lot. In 1871 he went to Italy, met Countess Danner again in Naples and died surprisingly on a subsequent trip to the Orient.
