Carl Birnbaum , also Karl Birnbaum ( December 26, 1803 in Leipzig - February 10, 1865 in Stuttgart ) was a German theater actor and opera singer ( bass ).

Life

Birnbaum was supposed to learn a civil trade, was also apprenticed to a bookbinder, but followed his unavoidable inclination and went to the stage after his apprenticeship. He entered the Dresden court stage as a choir player, where he soon found use in small parts, both in opera and in drama. In 1825 he left this engagement and came to Mainz as the second bass player, where he stayed for two years.

In 1827 he was appointed to Linz and from there to Augsburg . In the latter city he played a major role in reciting drama for the first time ("Oberförster" in the hunters ) and since he achieved notable success with the same, he turned almost exclusively to drama and comedy from then on.

His next engagement was in Brno, and from there he received an application to Kassel, where he filled the first comic subject, both in acting and in opera, with particular luck. He stayed there until 1835 to answer a tempting call to the court theater in Stuttgart. There he worked until his death on February 10, 1865, on which evening he played the role of "Sergeant Pencil" to stormy applause. After the second act, his life came to an end due to a blow flow .

family

In 1835 he married the actress Maria Sargany and through the morganatic marriage of his daughter Auguste (1837–1862) he was temporarily the father-in-law of Friedrich Wilhelm von Hanau .
