Carl Brewer (March 8, 1957 - June 12, 2020 ) was an American politician . He was the first African American to be elected Mayor of Wichita , Kansas, in 2007 and was confirmed in office on April 5, 2011. In 2015 he resigned from his position.

Brewer attended Wichita North High School until 1975 and studied at Friends University . For 30 years he worked in the aircraft industry at Boeing , Cessna and Spirit AeroSystems . From 2001 to 2007 he served on the Wichita Council for Wichita's City Council District 1.

Brewer served on the board of directors of the National League of Cities .

In 2018 he failed with a candidacy for governor of Kansas.

He died in June 2020 at the age of 63.
