Carl Christoffer Gjörwell (born January 19, 1766 in Stockholm ; † November 14, 1837 ) was a Swedish architect .

Life

Gjörwell began his training at the painting and sculpture school in his hometown and in 1788 he became a pupil of Louis Jean Desprez , who was currently planning the imaginary great castle in Hagapark . In 1794 Gjörwell went on a study trip, during which he stayed in Rome for a long time . After his return in 1796 he became the second city architect after Erik Palmstedt . Initially, he constructed country houses and small stately homes, but he was also involved in larger projects, such as the conversion of Karlberg Castle into a war academy, although Desprez continued to lead.

Gjörwell's first full-scale work was the drafts for the new main building of the Turku Academy , which was built from 1802 to 1815 under the direction of his colleague Charles Bassi . In 1803 Gjörwell Palmstedt was succeeded as chief urban architect in Stockholm and in the same year he was elected to the art academy. In 1808 he received the title of professor. During this time the smaller castle (today: Haga slott) and the echo temple (Ekotemplet) in Hagapark were built. Gjörwell's last major work was the garrison hospital (today: Provincial Court) in the Kungsholmen district , which was completed in 1834. He was also responsible for a number of altar decorations, pulpits and grave monuments.

In his architectural style, Gjörwell corresponded to his teacher Desprez, who represented a French direction that emerged between 1760 and 1770. This was based on Roman antiquity , albeit with a somewhat exaggerated view of simplicity and severity. As a decorator, he was highly regarded by his contemporaries. Gjörwell also created some etchings in his younger years which were published in books by his father.
