Carl DeLuna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Angelo DeLuna (born April 30, 1927 in Sicily , † July 21, 2008 in Kansas City (Missouri) , nickname "Tuffy") was an American mobster of the La Cosa Nostra and a powerful mafioso as the underboss of the Civella family ( Kansas City Crime Family ).

Life

Raised in Brooklyn , ( New York City ), DeLuna rose through the ranks of the hierarchy in his family to become the underboss, becoming Nicholas Civella's second husband. Carl DeLuna was related by marriage to Nicholas Civella's nephew, Anthony Civella at the time .

He himself claimed to have personally been responsible for the ambush on the three rival Spero brothers in 1978. In the mid-1970s, DeLuna maintained good connections with the Chicago Outfit , the Balistrieri family ( Milwaukee crime family ) and the Licavoli family ( Cleveland crime family ) during the Mafia infiltration of several gaming casinos in Las Vegas .

The Kansas City FBI suspected Mafia involvement in the Tropicana Casino in Las Vegas and launched a large-scale investigation known as "Operation Strawman" in which a large number of well-known gangsters and associates were wiretapped. Using the evidence gathered from this investigation into the late 1970s, the FBI found that the Tropicana Casino had illegally siphoned funds. It was found that Joe Agosto (director of the Tropicana Folies Bergere show ) was responsible for the fact that Nicholas Civella and Joseph Aiuppa (boss of the Chicago outfit) were secretly drawing money from the casino. In 1981 Joe Agosto, Nicholas Civella, his brother Carl Civella , Carl DeLuna and Carl Thomas, who siphoned off the funds with two other men, were indicted and convicted in 1983. These events were also filmed in Martin Scorsese's casino in 1995 . In the film, Piscano dies of a heart attack while the FBI surprises him at his house. In reality, the FBI broke into DeLuna his home on February 14, 1979 and found extensive cryptic notes in his basement relating to Las Vegas business. This fact, and the fact that DeLuna was bugged and wiretapped by the FBI for a long time, made the said charges possible in 1981.

DeLuna was sentenced to 30 years in prison and was released early from prison in 1998. He died of natural causes in Kansas City, Missouri , in 2008 .
