Carl Engelhorn (born March 1, 1849 in Stuttgart ; † December 12, 1925 there ) was a German publisher.

Life

Carl Engelhorn's father Johann Christoph Engelhorn founded the Engelhorn publishing house in Stuttgart. Carl attended grammar school in Stuttgart and studied at the technical university there before joining his father's publishing house as an apprentice.

Engelhorn took part in the 2nd Württemberg Jäger Battalion in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 before continuing his training as a bookseller in various domestic and foreign locations and working both in Berlin and in the USA. Engelhorn then rejoined the publishing house entirely. In 1890 Engelhorn continued the business as sole owner. In 1904 the long-time authorized signatory of the publishing house, Paul Schumann, was accepted as a partner, who took over the publishing house together with Adolf Spemann in 1910 , as Engelhorn had to retire due to illness.

Engelhorn was on the board of directors of the Stuttgart Publishers' Association from 1887. From 1891 to 1897 he was head of the South German Booksellers Association, and then from 1897 to 1901 first chairman of the German Book Trade Association . From 1904 to 1909 Engelhorn was the first head of the German Publishers' Association.

In Stuttgart he worked in the citizens' committee, in the chamber of commerce, in the board of directors of the Württembergische Sparkasse and in the Württembergischen Gothebund. In 1901 he donated the Stuttgart public library.

Engelhorn was married to Julie, b. Göpel, the daughter of the publisher Carl Göpel.
