Adolf Spemann

Adolf Spemann (born March 12, 1886 in Menton ; † October 10, 1964 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) was a German publisher and cultural politician.

Life

Adolf Spemann was born on March 12, 1886, the son of the publisher Wilhelm Spemann . The publisher Gottfried Spemann and the biologist Hans Spemann were among his five siblings . Adolf Spemann attended high school in Stuttgart, then completed an apprenticeship as a bookseller and studied philosophy, art, literature and music history at several universities. In 1910 he received his doctorate with the dissertation Johann Heinrich Dannecker : Life, Work, Man at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . In the same year he joined Engelhorn Verlag , expanded it into an important literary publisher, and finally became sole owner in 1937.

At the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels , Spemann was a committee member in the foreign department and also acted as secretary of the Max Reger Society. In the Reichsschrifttumskammer , Spemann became the head of the “Working Group of the Fine Spiritual Publishers” within the “Group of Writers”.

After the Second World War, Spemann continued to run Engelhorn Verlag until he sold it to the Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt in 1956 .
