Live and act

After graduating from high school at the Kaiser-Karls-Gymnasium in Aachen , Zimmermann began training as a surveyor in 1847 and passed the surveyor's examination in 1849. He then attended the Berlin Bauakademie , where he passed his construction manager examination in 1854.

Zimmermann then returned to Aachen, where he was involved in numerous urban construction projects. In 1878, together with the architect Jakob Kalff and others, he founded the construction company Kalff, Zimmermann & Cie , which in the following years was largely responsible for the new construction and expansion of an exclusive residential area on Aachen's Lousberg .

In those years Zimmermann was elected to the city council, despite the workload, and from March 16, 1878, he was elected mayor of the city of Aachen . In this position he made a special contribution to public life, in particular to the health and music industry. In addition, in 1885 he was one of the founding members of the Verein für Kunde der Aachener Vorzeit , where he was also elected chairman on the occasion of the constituent general assembly. A few weeks later, however, serious health problems forced him both to resign from the office of mayor and to resign from the chairmanship of the history association.

In the remaining years as a reindeer , he devoted himself to researching Aachen's history and wrote several publications.
