Carl Friedrich Ferdinand von Strantz (born December 22, 1774 in Pyritz , † September 11, 1852 in Breslau ) was an Austrian and Prussian officer .

Life

origin

Carl Friedrich Ferdinand Heinrich von Strantz came from an original aristocratic family who originally immigrated from Thuringia . He belonged to the Barkow line (Barkow, Greifenberg district in Pomerania had been the ancestral estate of this line since 1726) and was the eldest son of the Prussian major Friedrich Ferdinand von Strantz (1741–1793) and Louise von der Lahr (1737 -1807).

His two brothers were also Prussian officers. Both Ludwig von Strantz (1780–1856) and Gustav Adolf von Strantz (1784–1865) became lieutenant general.

Military career

Carl Friedrich Ferdinand von Strantz became a professional soldier. Contrary to the family tradition, he entered Austrian service and made it to the position of captain in the Kottulinsky infantry regiment. When the war of liberation against Napoleon broke out, he was an Imperial Austrian captain in the general staff, but was attached to Lieutenant Field Marshal Graf von Radetzky . With a letter of August 27, 1813 to Field Marshal Prince von Schwarzenberg , King Friedrich Wilhelm III. from Prussia Strantz the order pour le mérite:

".... gets a VO for the Austrian captain in the general staff v. Strantz, who was attached to Field Marshal Lieutenant Count Radetzky in the last campaign ... " .

After the Wars of Liberation, von Strantz joined Prussian service and advanced to lieutenant colonel.

In addition to military service, Carl Friedrich Ferdinand was also interested in cultural issues. He was a Master of Fine Arts and Dr. phil. H. c.

family

He was married to Therese von dem Bussche since 1816 (* August 17, 1784; † January 22, 1833). The couple had several children:

  • Ferdinand Ludwig Hugo (born June 25, 1817 - † June 4, 1883), retired Prussian lieutenant. D., later in the Dutch service
  • Bertha (* 1818 - March 21, 1880), canon in Gäseke-Kappeln
  • Sophie (* 1820)
  • Marie Karoline (born November 22, 1822 - † October 24, 1886), canoness in Tschirnau
  • Karl Gustav Ferdinand (January 4, 1825 - December 20, 1827)
