Ludwig Heinrich Leopold von Strantz (born February 29, 1780 in Pyritz , † October 22, 1856 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Ludwig belonged to the Strantz family from Brandenburg , originally from Thuringia , and settled with a branch in Brandenburg in the 14th century . His parents were the Prussian major Friedrich Ferdinand von Strantz (1741–1793), knight of the order Pour le Mérite , who fell in the First Coalition War against revolutionary France in 1793 , and his wife Louise Marianne, née von der Lahr (1737–1807). His brother Karl Friedrich Ferdinand Heinrich (1774-1852) was a lieutenant colonel and a writer, and his brother Gustav Adolf (1784-1865) became a lieutenant general.

Military career

Strantz was employed on March 31, 1792 as a private corporal in the infantry regiment "von Crousaz" of the Prussian army . He took part in the First Coalition War against revolutionary France in 1792/95 in the sieges of Verdun and Mainz , the battle of Kaiserslautern , and the battles at La Lune, Hochheim, Kostheim , Blieskastel , Ensheim and Blickweiler . In the meantime, Strantz had been promoted to second lieutenant on November 14, 1793 . After the end of the campaign, Strantz returned to his garrison in Poznan , where he became Premier Lieutenant on December 27, 1803 .

Also in the fourth coalition war in 1806 Strantz fought again against the French near Jena . After the battle near Halle and the defeat of Prussia, it was made inactive. At the end of May 1809 he was re-employed as a staff captain by the army, on March 15, 1810, Strantz was appointed adjutant to Gustav Kalixt von Biron and was promoted to Rittmeister at the beginning of September 1811 . In this position he took part in the battles at Großgörschen , Bautzen , Dresden , Kulm , Leipzig , La Rothière , Laon and Paris during the Wars of Liberation in 1813/14 against Napoleon . His achievements were recognized by the award of both classes of the Iron Cross , the Russian Order of St. Anna II. Class and the Order of St. George IV. Class.

As a major , Strantz joined the staff of Russian Field Marshal Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly at the end of May 1814 and took part in a visit to England. After his promotion to lieutenant colonel in October 1815, he became adjutant to Prince Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher at the beginning of September 1816 . Strantz remained in this position until his death. After the General Field Marshal's death, King Friedrich Wilhelm III awarded him . in recognition of the Order of St. John . A few months later Strantz was appointed second in command of Breslau. He remained connected to the city until his death. On May 21, 1826 he was appointed commander of Wroclaw and the city honored him on April 30, 1833 by conferring an honorary citizen . On September 27, 1841, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV awarded Strantz the star of the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. On March 24, 1842, he retired as lieutenant general with an annual pension of 1,750 thalers .

After leaving, Strantz moved to Berlin, where he died on October 22, 1856.

Stranz was married three times. His first marriage was on October 6, 1817 in Hermannsdorf Charlotte Antoinette Lucie Countess von Maltzahn from the Militsch family , divorced Countess von Haugwitz (1796–1834). The couple had several children:

After the death of his first wife, Strantz married Johanna Dorothea Lier, widowed von Schöning (* 1793), in Breslau on August 7, 1839 . He divorced her on March 24, 1841 and then married Emma Ida Laura von Rekowski (1818–1887) in Breslau on October 31, 1841. Daughter Emma (* 1846) emerges from the marriage.
