Friedrich Ferdinand von Strantz (born September 22, 1741 in Barckow , † November 17, 1793 near Blickweiler ) was a Prussian major and knight of the order Pour le Mérite .

Life

origin

Strantz belonged to the Barkow line of the Strantz dynasty , which derives its origin from the originally noble-free , Thuringian- born nobles from Tüllstedt, which can be proven since 1120. Hermann von Tüllstedt, Burgrave of Leisnig , took on the nickname Strantz in 1210. The family with Hermann, dictus Strantz, has appeared in the Mark Brandenburg since 1325 . He was the fifth son of Carl Ernst von Strantz (1707–1790), Lord of Barkow, Greifenhagen district , Pomerania, and Luise von Küssow (1714–1745).

Military career

As usual for the later sons of the Prussian landed gentry, Strantz chose the soldier profession. He joined the Prussian Army , became an infantryman in the Crousaz Infantry Regiment and made slow progress in the long period of peace after the Seven Years' War . In the First Coalition War against revolutionary France, in the meantime risen to major , he proved himself so much in an attack by his regiment on Kostheim on May 3, 1793 that his commander, Major General von Wegnern , awarded him the order of Pour to the king le Mérite suggested. With the very highest cabinet order of May 9, 1793, King Friedrich Wilhelm II complied with this proposal. " [...] I am sending you 2 medals plm to hand them out to the two officers [ ie von Strantz and von Weyher] of the Crousaz regiment from Meintwegen who attacked Kostheim on the 3rd of d. have distinguished very excellently [...] ”. On November 17, 1793 Strantz fell in battle near Blickweiler on the Saar.
