Carl Hieronymus Euler (* 1834 in Basel ; † November 27, 1901 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Swiss-Brazilian bird collector and ornithologist .

Life

After finishing high school in Basel, Euler emigrated to Brazil in 1853 . In Cantagalo near Rio de Janeiro he bought the farm Fazenda do Born Vallé . In addition, he held the office of Swiss Vice Consul in Rio de Janeiro. In his spare time he devoted himself to bird watching in his area. When Euler contacted Jean Louis Cabanis in 1867 , several of his specialist articles on the reproductive biology of Brazilian bird taxa were published in the Journal of Ornithology . His work on the brood and eggs of Brazilian birds was published between 1867 and 1869. In 1877 Euler had to break off his bird studies in Cantagalo and move to Rio de Janeiro. However, his contact with Hermann von Ihering enabled him to continue his ornithological work. Euler's notes were published in Ihering's work " Revista do Museo Paulista " in 1900 . Euler researched the nests, eggs, and breeding seasons of 223 bird taxa. He was also a passionate bird collector, whose bellows material is kept in the Berlin Museum of Natural History and in the Brazilian National Museum in Rio de Janeiro.

He also honored Euler Art epithet of Perlbrustkuckucks ( Coccyzus euleri ).
