Carl Joachim Stimming

Carl Joachim Stimming (born May 15, 1876 in Fürstenwalde / Spree ; † November 6, 1931 in Hamburg ) was a German entrepreneur and general director of North German Lloyd (NDL).

biography

Stimming, born and raised in Fürstenwalde / Spree , did his military service in Erlangen from 1894 and attended the Friedrich-Alexander University there . He studied law and became a member of the Baruthia Corps . After completing his studies, he embarked on a career in the naval administration and was from 1903 to 1910, most recently as head of department, at the Imperial Naval Directorate in Kiel . Later he was appointed assistant to the Reichsmarineministerium and advanced to the department head for the garrison administration. After the outbreak of the First World War, he was entrusted with the organization of the provisions center. In 1915 he joined the Reich Treasury as an advisor to the Reich Finance Administration. In 1917 he became a go. Appointed Oberregierungsrat, but left the Reichsdienst in the same year.

He joined the board of directors of North German Lloyd (NDL), initially as head of the cabin and tween deck department. In April 1921 he became General Director of the NDL as the successor to Philipp Heineken . In 1920 the NDL still had a fleet of small steamers with a total of 57,000 GRT. In his time, rebuilding the shipping company was the most important task. A post-war boom in the NDL fleet followed. In 1924 the 32,354 GRT passenger ship was put into service as Columbus . Between 1925 and 1928, Lloyd took over a number of shipping companies such as HABAL, Roland-Linie and Argo . In 1929 and 1930 the two passenger steamers, Bremen and Europa, were put into service. The economic crisis of 1928/31 also led to a crisis for the shipping company.

Stimming died in 1931 in the Bethanien Hospital in Hamburg as a result of an accident. He was buried in the family crypt in Bremen. His successor at NDL was Ernst Glässel for a short time .

Honors

The law faculty of the University of Erlangen awarded Stimming an honorary doctorate.
