Life

CJ Becker was the son of the lawyer Carl Anton Johan Becker (1863-1938) and his wife Henny Mathilde, née Døcker (1888-1976). Becker began archaeological investigations while he was still at school, particularly in Sejerø Bay . He visited the metropolitan cities and began studying at the University of Copenhagen in 1933. There he won the university award in 1936 and passed his master's degree in 1939 . In 1948 he received his doctorate with the dissertation "Mosefundne Lerkar fra Yngre Stenalder" ("Clay vessels from bog finds of the Neolithic"). As early as 1934 he became an employee at the Danish National Museum , from 1941 as inspector of the 1st department (Afdelingen for nordisk oldtid) .

In 1951 he accepted the chair for Nordic archeology and European prehistory at the University of Copenhagen, where he succeeded his teacher Johannes Brøndsted . Until his retirement in 1985, he headed the University's Prehistory and Archaeological Institute. In 1961 he became a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences , of which he was a board member from 1978 to 1986. From 1968 to 1975 he was also a member of Statens Humanistiske Forskningsråd , the state research council for the humanities. In numerous excavations and publications, Becker dealt primarily with all periods and cultures of the Neolithic in southern Scandinavia, but he also devoted himself to questions of the Bronze Age and the pre-Roman Iron Age . He followed a special inclination with his investigations into Scandinavian coinage of the 11th century. In 1975 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy .
