Life

Carl Kühne began studying mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Berlin-Charlottenburg in the summer semester of 1890 and was active in the Corps Saxonia-Berlin in the same semester. In the summer semester of 1891, the then suspended Corps Pomerania, today's Corps Pomerania-Silesia in Bayreuth, reconstituted with three other Berlin Corps students.

After graduating, he entered the civil service, initially as a government site manager for mechanical engineering. In 1900 he was appointed government builder. From 1900 to 1905 he built systems for the Charlottenburg waterworks. With his work he became a pioneer of modern water supply for large cities and metropolitan areas. His special concern was the highlighting of the hygienic advantages of the groundwater as well as the cooperation between science and practice in water supply technology.

He was one of the leading figures in urban water supply in Germany. From 1922 to 1925 he was chairman of the Brandenburg Association of Gas and Water Experts, and from 1926 to 1928 of the German Gas and Water Association (DVGW). He played a leading role in the Gas and Water exhibition in Berlin in 1929 . On his initiative, the Berlin Water Works Museum, which was destroyed in bombing raids in World War II, was built in a former machine house of the Westend intermediate pumping station.
