Carl Mossdorf (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Mossdorf (born February 24, 1901 in Zurich ; died October 29, 1969 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss architect who, as a representative of New Building and later of post-war modernism, helped shape Lucerne's building history.

Education and career

Carl Mossdorf was the grandson of Gustav Mossdorf and the son of the Lucerne city architect Karl Mossdorf-Robbiani. He obtained the technical Matura at the Cantonal School of Lucerne and studied from 1920 at the ETH Zurich , where he graduated in 1924, with a semester abroad at the Technical University of Munich (1921). From 1925 to 1926 he was employed in Leipzig by his relative Hermann Mossdorf. Back in Switzerland, he initially worked in various Zurich offices and shared an office with Hans-Robert Beck.

In 1933, with the order for the Tribschen commercial building, he was able to set up his own business in Lucerne. This house, which has been remodeled today, was one of the most consistent examples of modernism in Switzerland with its separation of pillars and room closure, its flush-fitting ribbon windows and its arcade access. An arcade access also characterizes the "Geissmatt" housing estate, a four-row building whose apartments are strictly repetitively based on a single type. In addition, detached houses were built in the Lucerne quarters of Bramberg, Wesemlin, Steinhof and Geissenstein during this period.

In 1938 he built the Rothenburg depot building for the Sempach agricultural cooperative as an architectural task in keeping with the modern age . Here, as in the Geissmatt housing estate, he was by no means planning a flat roof, but simple saddle roofs.

At the end of the 1940s the Wagenhalle was built, a tram depot on Eschenstrasse in Lucerne with technically striking gate fronts and then the central school building of Emmenbrücke, which he won after a two-stage competition. In the 1950s, Mossdorf and four other architecture firms built one of the large industrial buildings of its era, the Schindler elevator factory in Ebikon. In 1962 he handed the office over to his younger brother Gustav.

Remarks

  1. On the occasion of an excursion, ef writes about this: «Here, too, we were attracted by the natural and unpretentious nature of the buildings (they don't even have a flat roof!) And once again we wondered whether the problem of church building could not be so simple, direct and of course could tackle.
