Carl Ostersetzer (* 1850 in Brody ; † 1914 in Vienna ) was an Austrian genre painter .

Life and works

Carl Ostersetzer was temporarily active in Munich . He painted rather small-format pictures, mostly in oil on wood or on canvas. He signed with “C. Easter setter ". Little seems to be known about his life.

Among other things, he created depictions of craftsmen at work or in their typical ambience. His portrayal of a blacksmith was appraised in the TV show Kunst und Krempel in 2012 . It was emphasized that the painted forge could have existed in a similar form two to three centuries before the painter's time, but would only be a thing of the past a few decades later. The picture was interpreted as a farewell to the traditional small craftsman from the time of transition to large industrial companies.

Pictures in public collections

A work by Ostersetz, which shows a schoolmaster with his caricature in front of a blackboard, hangs in the Friedrichshafen School Museum . The zither player or the musical forester was shown in 1996 in the exhibition Jagdzeit in the Vienna Historical Museum . The picture bears inventory number 30.646 of the Vienna Historical Museum.
