Carl Reinhold Sahlberg

Carl Reinhold Sahlberg (born January 22, 1779 in Eura ; † October 18, 1860 in Yläne ) was a Finnish-Swedish scientist. His author's abbreviation is "Sahlb."

Life

Carl Reinhold Sahlberg was a son of Isak Reinhold Sahlberg and Lovisa Katarina Polviander. In 1818 he became professor of economics and natural sciences at the Turku Academy . Here he built an entomological collection (mainly beetles). After the fire in Turku in 1827, Sahlberg went to the University of Helsinki. He rebuilt the lost collection, played an important role in the development of the university's botanical garden and founded the “ Societas pro fauna et flora fennica ” with his students . His collection is now in the Finnish Museum of Natural History in Helsinki.

In 1807 Sahlberg married Johanna Sofia Björkfors. The son Reinhold Ferdinand (1811–1874) also became a scientist and explorer. His grandson John Reinhold (1845-1920) was a botanist and zoologist at the University of Helsingfors.

Memberships

When La Société Cuvierienne was founded in 1838 , he was one of the 140 founding members of the society.
